Ice Bath Buying Guide: How to Choose a Cold Plunge in Perth
Cold plunges have gone from something you'd only find at a recovery clinic or a footy club to a genuinely normal thing to have in a Perth backyard. But "buy an ice bath" covers a lot of very different products — some are little more than an insulated barrel, others are a proper tub-and-chiller system built to run daily for years. Here's what we think actually matters when you're choosing one.
What's actually in a home ice bath system
A decent cold plunge setup for home use is really three things working together, not just a tub:
The tub — holds the water, insulates it, and needs to survive being outside in the WA sun and being climbed in and out of, wet, several times a week.
The chiller — keeps the water at a set temperature instead of relying on bags of ice. This is what turns a novelty into something you'll actually use year-round.
Filtration — keeps the water clean between changes, since nobody wants to top up a swimming pool's worth of chemicals every few days for a tub you're using solo or as a couple.

A few things worth knowing before you pick:
Those capacity figures assume an oval-shaped fill at 40cm deep — fill it shallower or deeper and the litres scale roughly in proportion.
The internal dimensions are a bit smaller than the external ones on every model, since the insulation and cedar cladding take up some of that footprint — measure the space you actually have before assuming the biggest tub will fit.
If two of you want to plunge together regularly, the XL is genuinely worth the extra space over cramming into a Standard or Black Edition.
The chiller: the part that actually matters most
The tub is really just a well-built esky without the chiller. This is the part that means you're not lugging bags of ice to your backyard every session — and it's the same 1HP unit across all three tub sizes, so this part of the decision is already made for you.
What it does:
Temperature range of 3°C to 42°C — so it's not just a cold plunge. Turn it up and the same tub works as a warm soak, which is a nice option in the middle of a Perth winter.
Draws about 1kW from the wall (roughly 4A) whether it's heating or cooling — no special circuit needed, it plugs straight into a standard household power point. It has its own built-in RCD (safety switch) either way.
Runs at around 50dB — about the noise of a quiet conversation or a fridge running. If yours ever sounds like it's grinding or rattling, that's not normal and worth getting checked.
IPX4 splash-proof rating — fine for typical outdoor weather and the odd rain shower, but not designed to sit in direct, unprotected exposure indefinitely. If it's going somewhere fully exposed to the elements, we'd recommend the optional protective chiller box.
Needs about 1 metre of clear space on all sides to breathe properly, and shouldn't be positioned more than 2 metres from the tub itself.
Realistically, from a cold start, expect up to around 4 hours to pull the water down a full 20°C — after that, day-to-day top-ups between sessions are usually a lot quicker, often back to temperature within half an hour or so.
Filtration: keeping the water usable between changes
Every ZenChill runs a 3-stage system:
A mesh pre-filter that catches the bigger debris before it reaches anything else.
A 20-micron filter for the finer stuff.
Built-in ozone sterilisation, disinfecting the water without you needing to dose it constantly.

Where to put it
A few practical things to sort out before delivery day:
Pool fencing rules can apply. Requirements vary by council and by state, covering things like fencing height and gate compliance. We'd strongly recommend a quick call to your local council to check what applies at your address before you install — it's a much easier conversation to have before the tub arrives than after.
Give the chiller room to breathe — that 1 metre of clearance on all sides isn't optional if you want it running efficiently and quietly.
Indoor or outdoor both work, but if it's going somewhere exposed to direct sun and rain full-time, the protective chiller box is worth adding.
Perth's water is decent but not perfect — a lot of customers fill with a basic filtered water source (even something as simple as a caravan-style inline filter) rather than straight from the tap. Not essential, but it means less work keeping the water balanced.
Warranty and what happens if something goes wrong
Tub: 5-year structural warranty.
Chiller: 12-month warranty.
Change of mind: cancel any time before dispatch for a full refund. Once it's delivered, you've got 30 days to return it if it's still new, unused and in its original packaging — post it back or drop it at our Balcatta warehouse (just get in touch first to book a time). You cover return postage, there's no restocking fee, and refunds go through within 7 days of us getting it back. Once it's installed, returns are handled case by case instead, since "unused" is off the table by then.
Something arrive damaged? Flag it within 48 hours with photos and we'll repair, replace or refund it.
An actual fault down the track isn't a return, it's a warranty claim — and for those, we typically come to you to assess and fix it on-site rather than asking you to send anything back. A claim usually gets a response within about 5 business days.
Delivery and installation
We deliver and install across Perth Metro (postcodes 6000–6200), usually within about a week of stock landing once your order's confirmed. Outside that area — including interstate — we can still get one to you, it just needs a custom freight quote first (typically back to you within 48 hours). Prefer to grab it yourself? Pickup from our Balcatta warehouse is always an option too.
However it gets to you, our installers make sure everything's built correctly and running before they leave, clean up fully, and take the rubbish with them. The only thing left behind is your new ice bath.

FAQ
Is it just a cold plunge, or can it be used as a hot tub too?
Both. The chiller runs from 3°C right up to 42°C across all three tub sizes, so it doubles as a warm soak whenever you want one — it's not a separate product line, just the same unit doing both jobs.
Do I need an electrician or a special power outlet?
No. The chiller has its own built-in safety switch (RCD) and plugs into any standard household power point. If you're at all unsure about an outdoor power point's condition, it's worth having an electrician take a look, but the chiller itself doesn't require special wiring.
Does buying a sauna and ice bath together save money?
